Alleyah the Undergraduate Scholar: Digital Design Projects and Exploration

My women’s center era

2022-2026

I worked at the Women’s Center at Brooklyn College all throughout undergrad and even six months after. My official title being “Social Media Associate.” I started out as a Program Assistant who designed print flyers and social media post under the Program Coordinator. This role strongly influenced my studies in Digital Design Production and my proficiency in using Canva. Later, I was appointed to manage the Social Media, Newsletter and Fundraising Campaigns. Sometimes this bled into me doing jobs for our sister office, BCAP (Brooklyn College AANAPISI Project) and Faculty Led Events. This has been one of my favorite jobs because it connected my love of Design, Logistics, Politics/Activism, and Community.

This Flyer to the above-left received so much love for the warm feeling it created at our Valentine’s Day Potluck. It came with a presentation that played on the monitor in our lounge. And that’s when I became addicted to conveying the feeling having fun through my flyers. College life is such long-term reward system, I wanted to give my schoolmates something to look forward to, just from the flyer.

The Barefoot General

The Barefoot General

My first role as a book illustrator is a love letter to my Jamaican Heritage.

Crystal Schloss Allen, author of The Barefoot General, and Director of Operations the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at Brooklyn College, asked ME to be the Illustrator of her first children’s book. We both share Jamaican Heritage in neighboring parishes. Illustrating for this book was not just looking at reference photos. It was drawing from my own memory. Something I’m really grateful for was the opportunity to draw people. All my life, I’ve enjoyed drawing and excelled at it. However, I was never comfortable drawing the finer features of human model like hands/finger and feet/toes. And for a book titled “The BAREFOOT General,” I had to draw a lot of phalanges. For the project, I hand drew the graphics, scanned them, and put it all together digitally.

Social Media Posts

I met these lovely folk at Thrifting event in Williamsburg. They were selling some lovely leather jackets. They told me about another upcoming event they were selling at, and I asked if I could design their post. Obviously the answer was yes!

Custom GTA ONLINE Server Poster

This project was really fun to make! A YouTuber I used to watch asked her audience if anyone knew how to make poster for the server she was planning on starting. Although her plans to start the server didn’t work out. I made this poster for her based on her gameplay. Her name was on the chain in the top left. I layered over the name ‘BIANCA’ for anonymity.

Cyberfeminist Manifesto

“Real Life Avatars” By Alleyah Charlton

After reading and discussing the assigned readings, “The Cyborg Manifesto” by Donna J Haraway and “Glitch Feminism” by Legacy Russell, I began to relate to Russell’s sentiment about escaping and exploring yourself as an avatar online. Growing up, I spent hours a day escaping to virtual worlds like Woozworld, IMVU and Stardoll. I was able to express and explore my identity in a way I didn’t feel like I could in real life.

This video is a Manifesto I made for my Interactive Art class end of semester project, during undergrad. I was also deeply influenced by the Internet Art class I was taking that semester. In both classes we explored using technology as a tool for creating art and the integration of AI. We also talked a lot about our own personal relationships with the technology in our lives. What I appreciated was the fact that we were never encouraged to be blindly optimistic about the role technology currently plays in our lives, especially the negative. My professors encouraged us engaging with these negative emotions to create art.

Due to the unethical way we consume AI in the US, I try to limit any deliberate use of AI in my life. These class were my opportunity to learn about AI tools and how to incorporate them rather than rely on them.

Internet art nft project

The task for this project was to find existing art and remix it into an NFT. I went to the Brooklyn Artists exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum and the base art for “If There Where 3..”, “Duality Of An Devine Alien” and “In Bey We Trust.” I don’t have a title for the last one, but the base image is from the ladies room at the restaurant in the Barclay Center.
